Voter verification speeds up as deadline nears

NASHIK :

The district election branch will have an uphill task in the next two days to complete voter verification of over 6 lakh electorate across 15 state Assembly constituencies in the district as the deadline under the Election Commission of India’s Voter Verification and Information Programme (VVIP) is ending on Thursday (February 13).

By Monday (Feb 10), the election branch has completed verification of as many as 38,94,000 electorates out of the total 45,62,703 voters in 15 state Assembly segments of the district. Citing verification of remaining 6,68,000 electorate within the next two days’ stipulated time-frame, the district collector, meanwhile, has warned booth level officers (BLOs) of stern action in case failure to meet the deadline.

“84% of the assigned task is already finished. The BLOs need to focus on completion of rest of the 21% voter verifications by Thursday,” the district collector said. Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Maharashtra, Baldev Singh in his last week district visit had reviewed voter verification drive being undertaken in the Nashik Division. Jalgaon district is leading in the progress of voter verification followed by Nashik district.

Meanwhile, dy district election officer Kundan Sonanware is on Malegaon tour to remove misconceptions about CAA and NCR which are hindering the progress of the national level Voter Verification and Information Programme.
The ECI has launched the voter verification programme for citizens for verifications of their names, new registrations, changes in the voter details and corrections in the Voter Id Cards.

Earlier, The Election Commission had extended the deadline for voter verfication/authentication by two months to February 20, 2020 from December 20, 2019 and had set target to verify details of 45 lakh electors in 15 assembly constituencies of the district. The election branch is to prepare draft voter list by February 28.

Under the voter verification drive, booth level officers (BLOs) are conducting door-to-door visits to verify the voters’ entries. The officials are verifying the voter details by using any of the 10 documents authenticated and approved by the commission. The BLOs however would not be authorised to demand any specific documents out of the ten documents validated by the ECI. The drive is being conducted in the larger interest of citizens for verification of their names, inclusion/deletion/correction in the voter details and Voter IDs.

The EC is also confirming the addition of Aadhaar Card and registered phone numbers in the electoral roll ensuring that names of the transferred, duplicate voters, the deceased and bogus voters should be omitted from the verified electoral roll. Under the verification, first-time voters upon completion of 18 years as on January 2020 will find place in the verified roll.
