Number drops significantly in district

NASHIK: By the end of November 2021, 22 farmers have committed suicide in the district. In 2020, 44 farmers took their lives due to the burden of loans, and in 2019, 69 farmers decided to end their lives. There is a reassuring picture of an overall decline in farmer suicides.

In the district and state, in the last few years, due to debts, a vicious cycle of farmer suicides has begun. Due to excessive rainfall, drought, untimely, continuous rains, indebtedness, and debts taken for crops, the farmers in the state and the district choose suicide as their last option. In the year 2018, the number of farmer suicides in the district had crossed the hundred mark.

In the following year, 69 farmers took their lives due to financial and other hardships. However, after that, the issue came to the fore and a task force was formed in the state to break the cycle of suicide.

In the district too, the task force interacted with the farmers and discouraged them from committing suicide and gave them hope. Also, due to the Centre’s PM Kisan Sanman Yojana, the loan waiver given by the state government, the farmers got out of some financial difficulties. Therefore, in the last two years, the graph of farmer suicides is declining. In the current year, 22 farmers lost their lives.
