Flood control plan by the district administration

NASHIK: The district administration last year prepared an emergency flood control plan with a view that it will be useful for all during any flooding. Considering the confusion in the disaster management plan in detail, a special concept of flood SOP was implemented last year. This year the SOP has been updated.

It can be difficult to act fast during an emergency after going through detailed information in the disaster management plan, the district administration last year prepared a short action plan regarding the measures to be taken in such a situation, especially during flooding.

There are clear cut instructions about the responsibilities and works of respective officials from the police department, revenue department, local self-governing bodies and other departments. This plan last year helped in minimizing the losses due to flooding. It has information in the form of a flow chart for all the government agencies — from Nashik Municipal Corporation to the water resources department and villages to be prepared to face natural disasters during monsoon.

Meanwhile, in view of this, the district administration has made all the preparations to deal with any flood situation and rescue work and the system is ready to deal with any situation. Boats are important for rescue operations in flood situations. At present, the Disaster Management Department has 19 boats ready.

Also, 9 rubber boats have been requested from the state disaster management department. A team of NDRF, SDRF, local search and rescue team has been deployed to rescue people in case of floods, evacuate them to safer places and carry out post-flood transport and relief operations. The district administration has ordered to keep internet, printer, TV, video conferencing system in good condition in the control room of the Municipal Corporation, Zilla Parishad along with the Collectorate.

“Though there was a major flood last year, there was no casualty. The property loss was also minimum. Pre-planning had played an important role in it. In case of confusion over the works and responsibilities of concerned departments while implementation of the disaster management plan, it is difficult to handle the situation. Considering this Nashik district had implemented a special concept of ‘Flood SOP’ last year and it proved very useful. The same has been implemented this year after updating it.” – Suraj Mandhare, District Collector
