The Congress-Shiv Sena affair: Timeline
In the state of Maharashtra, where the crisis is lurking on the fate of the state, government formation is seemingly getting impossible. But in politics, a quote by John.F Kennedy, “In a time of domestic crisis, men of goodwill and generosity should be able to unite regardless of party or politics, he had stated.
Somewhere in the 90’s…BJP had completed 25 years to mark this a special supplement was published by a prominent media house in Mumbai to celebrate its silver jubilee. In his interview, then BJP’s Lal Krishna Advani had stated special memoirs regarding Shiv Sena and Sena Supremo. Balasaheb Thackeray. And he said, “Although the Jana Sangh and the BJP alliance has been caused due to coalition with multiple parties.
But our alliance with the Shiv Sena is quite different. We do not feel that we are two different parties, “Advani said in his interview.” Former Prime Minister & poet. Late Atal Bihari Vajpayee had described this alliance with his poetic genius in very few precise diplomatic words.
In one of his speeches , while refering to Shiv Sena, You have Thackeray, we have Kushabhau Thackeray.
You have Manohar Joshi, we have Dr.Murli Manohar Joshi, if you have Mr.Bhujbal (Then Bhujbal was in Sena, then we have power of intellect (Buddhibal).
Then Sena supremo.Balasaheb would treat , the creator of the Shiv Sena-BJP alliance Late Pramod Mahajan, similar to his son. But Shivsena, who is so close to the BJP and NDA, vehemently exited the NDA and broke the alliance with BJP.
This came, prior to the decision of Ayodhya Case verdict, which was declared by the apex court immediately next day. As far as the BJP- Shiv Sena along with Balasaheb Thackeray shared a common thread of relationship Ram temple issue.
The Disputed mosque in Ayodhya which was demolished on December 6, 1992, the BJP leaders, who were afraid to reveal about their role into the demolition of Babri Masjid, and the role of Kar Sevaks in the demolition process.
Where they passed the bucks or blamed that the disputed mosque could have been demolished by the Shiv Sena.
At that time, Bala Balasaheb, who came running in a haste like a godly Hanuman and made a shrill Hindutva point of view that, “If my Shiv Sainiks had demolished the Babri Masjid, then I am proud of them.” With this earth shaking statement, he became the bone of contention for the BJP. “
But within seven years of his death of Balasaheb, the Shiv Sena’s alliance with BJP of thirty years was called off.
And the BJP who was proud of it, the alliance collapsed on November 9, 2019 and the Shiv Sena took to harsh criticism against the alliance with the BJP in a fiery articles published in the Saamna and charged Press Conferences.
But there may be possibilities of Uddhav Thackeray being elevated to the Chief Minister post and Deputy CM as Balasaheb Thorat of the Congress or the Jayant Patil from the Nationalist Congress Party could be given as Deputy Chief Minister.
Earlier 20 years ago, when the Congress and NCP were in power for the first time in the state, the new young blood was given way by keeping the old guards apart. It was from this that the leadership of Ajit Pawar, Jayant Patil, RR Patil, Dilip Walse Patil emerged.
Today, the same page of history is being repeated, as the Congress and the Nationalists can bring forward the young leadership amongst us.The Amit Deshmukh, Praniti Shinde and Rohit Pawar can also be included in the Cabinet.
However, former chief ministers Ashok and Prithviraj Chavan and deputy chief ministers Ajit Pawar and Chhagan Bhujbal may need to handle the role of mentor in BJP’s language for some time. Looking into the history of the Shiv Sena, it seems that the Shiv Sena’s beginning and growth has come with the blessings of the Congress.
The then chief minister of the Congress, Late. Vasantrao Naik, used the Sena to prevent the communist influence in the working class. This was marked by the assassination of Communist MLA Krishna Desai in the same period.
The affair with the Shiv Sena-Congress became so romantic that in the Municipal Corporation polls, that then Murali Deora of the Congress was extended support for the mayorship by the ruling Shiv Sena.Congress had then elected three Senate member MLAs in the assembly.
Late Vasant Dada Patil, Late A R Antulay and Sharad Pawar had always shared cordial relations with Balasaheb. The Sena-Congress affair turned sour or bitter when Late. Pramod Mahajan did a alliance with Shiv Sena in 1989 on the issue of Hindutva.
Today, post thirty years later, Uddhav Thackeray is again taking Shiv Sena closer to the Congress and this new tripartite alliance, could be known as ‘Maha Shiv’. Late. Balasaheb Thackeray had always repeatedly vehemently criticised the Nehru -Gandhi family.
But today the Sena and Sanjay Raut is looking forward for the alliance with the Congress to address the 60 year old Karnataka boundary issues. Many times in politics, the opponents have to forget their indifferences and bitterness, in order to bury the hatchet to set a common minimum point (CMP).
Today, a similar scenario is visible today. The Shiv Sena has exited out of the BJP-led National Democratic Front, which means that the heavy industry in the Center makes the Sena feel like a loaf of bread and not bread (politically fact).
This will have far-reaching impacts on the Mumbai Municipal Corporation to the Gram Panchayat polls in the state. And this three parties will sideline the BJP making it look like a loner. The BJP which started the Ralao alliance, with regional parties, is slowly being sidelined.
In Haryana, perhaps Congress could have defeated Mohanlal Khattar’s government by giving Chautala as the Chief Minister.
