Star witness in Kasab trial, Harishchandra Shrivardhankar died in Thane

Septuagenarian Harishchandra Shrivardhankar, who identified Ajmal Kasab, the lone terrorist captured alive during the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai, during the trial, has died at his house in Kalyan, his family members said.
Shrivardhankar (70), who was the star witness in the case, had also suffered a couple of bullet wounds in the firing at Cama Hospital on that bloody night.

He was staying with his family in the Yogidham housing complex of Kalyan (west). Originally from Harihareshwar in Konkan, he was a retired employee of the Food & Civil Supplies Department. Harishchandra Shrivardhankar, suffering from Alzheimer’s disease, passed away on Tuesday night at around 2030 hours due to this illness. He is survived by his wife, two children and two daughters-in-law. Shrivardhankar was the first witness to identify Kasab. He was one of the key witnesses in Kasab’s infamous case of an attack on Mumbai.

He had identified and testified against Kasab before the special court. He was also hit in the back by two bullets fired by Kasab and his accomplice Abu Ismail. Shrivardhankar had hit Ismail with his office bag.

A few days ago, Harishchandra was in a very difficult situation and was very sick. His family could not afford his medical treatment. He was helpless and was found on the footpath and had not eaten for several days. A shop keeper from Sat Rasta, Chinchpokli, D’souza, had helped him and reunited him with the help of the police. The local corporator from Gauripada Daya Gaikwad of BJP got him admitted to a private hospital at Kalyan and started his treatment.

Opposition leader Devendra Fadnavis had a couple of weeks back visited a private hospital in Kalyan to inquire about Mr Shrivardhankar’s health. Fadnavis had announced that BJP would provide Rs 10 lakh to Shrivardhankar’s family. Former MLA Narendra Pawar, former mayor, Rajendra Devalekar, corporator Daya Gaikwad condoled his death. Pawar said he had the Alzheimer’s disease for which he was getting treatment at the hospital and died all of a sudden on Tuesday.
