Nashik: Rajashri Shahu Maharaj had started to give reservation to backward class people in government jobs and end caste based system first in the country, stated regional Deputy Commissioner (social welfare, Nashik) Rajendra Kalal.
A programme was organised to observe social justice day at Raosaheb Thorat hall on Gangapur Road by Assistant Commissioner (social welfare, Nashik) to mark birth anniversary of Shahu Maharaj. Assistant Commissioner (social welfare, Nashik) Devidas Nandgaonkar, Prof. Ashok Sonawane, Principal of social science college Vilas Deshmukh and senior social welfare inspector S B Tribhuvan were present.
Kalal said that Rajashri Shahu Maharaj had taken the first step for social equality. He had raised his voice against various bad traditions and norms. He had in real sense started social reservation in the country. Social justice department is moving on the thoughts of Mahatma Phule, Rajashri Shahu Maharaj and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. The department is conducting many social welfare schemes for progress of backward classes, he informed.
Prof. Ashok Sonawane delivered his lecture on life and work by Rajashri Shahu Maharaj. Satyashodhak Samaj was started at that time in Kolhapur with inspiration by Shahu Maharaj. Education work by him was remarkable. It was his target to spread education among people. Shahu Maharaj had started hostels for students belonging to various castes and had started scholarship for needy students, Prof. Sonawane stated.
“We cannot forget that Shahu Maharaj had passed a law in south India to make primary education compulsory and free in his state. He had taken hard efforts to bring society out from superstitions, illiteracy, social discrimination and poverty,” he informed.
Special distinction holder students in SSC and HSC examinations from ashramshala for vimukt jati and nomadic tribe were felicitated. Mrs. Dandekar compered the programme, whereas S B Tribhuvan proposed the vote of thanks.
Meanwhile, a samata rally was organised from Hutatma Smarak. It was flagged off by Mayor Ranjana Bhansi. Regional Deputy Commissioner Rajendra Kalal, Assistant Commissioner Devidas Nandgaonkar, Principal of KTHM college V B Gaikwad, convener of NSS Prof. Ashok Sonawane and Principal of social work college Vilas Deshmukh were present.
