Residents firm on their demand for closure of liquor shop


Panchavati : Women from Malegaon Stand area in Panchavati came together and gave a request letter to liquor shop owner not to run his shop. They also felicitated him with shawl and bouquet and urged him to close the shop in ‘Gandhigiri’ style.
The Supreme Court issued orders to close all wine shops, permit rooms and beer bars within 500 metres of state and national highways. Local residents expressed their happiness over closure of liquor shops along the highways, whereas on the other local residents in city area are facing problems due to rush at liquor shops in residential areas.
Meanwhile, local residents have to face inconvenience due to rush in the liquor shop in Malegaon Stand area in Panchavati since a month. There is increase in scuffles.
Local residents had conducted a meeting 15 days back for closure of wine shop, permit room and liquor shop. They had met the District Collector, officials of state excise department and Police Commissioner on April 23 and gave them a memorandum for closure of these shops. They had warned of severe agitation if these shops are not transferred from the area within seven days, but as there was no action, local residents staged sit-in agitation opposite the liquor shop and demanded its closure. They gave the request letter and a bouquet to the owner and urged him to close the shop.
Former Health Minister Shobha Bachhav, corporator Gurmeet Bagga, Kamlesh Bodke, Naresh Patil, Khandu Bodke, Dinesh Bachhav metropolitan chief of Darubandi Janandolan Samiti Dipti Gaikwad, little children and women in large numbers took part in the agitation.
