NASHIK :

Migrant workers are still forced to walk thousands of kilometres to reach their homes, amid national lockdown among whom a pregnant migrant woman delivered a baby on road.

A pregnant migrant labourer who was walking from Nashik to her native village in Madhya Pradesh gave birth on the way. She rested for 2 hours after giving birth and then continued with the walk for another 150 kilometre.

The woman, a resident of Nashik for livelihood but hailing originally from Madhya Pradesh, and other people walking with her had lost their jobs in Nashik due to the closing of industries. With no food and money left, they decided to walk to their homes in Madhya Pradesh.

According to report, the pregnant woman identified as Shakuntala and her husband started their journey from Nashik and were walking towards their home in Satna, Madhya Pradesh.

She experienced labour pain between Nashik and Dhule during the long and arduous walk home. Her husband said, “After she gave birth, we rested for two hours and then we walked for at least 150 kilometre.” Her husband said that a Sikh family gave clothes and essentials for the newborn baby at Dhule.

Satna Block Medical Officer, AK Ray said, “We got to know that the administration at border arranged a bus for them, as they reached Unchehara we brought them Satna. All check-ups have been done, both mother and the baby are doing fine.”

With no options available, the poor migrants across district are still taking the roads to go back home. While some have managed to hire vehicles, some are climbing up trucks, tempos or riding cycles for hundreds of kilometre. Many others have resorted to walking the distance.
