Pay salaries to non-granted school teachers, orders education dept

NASHIK :

Taking advantage of the dire situation created by the Covid-19 in the state, the non-granted schools, private school and institutions are holding salaries of teachers. The school education department has issued orders and has directed that they should be paid immediately. The department of school education has also warned that action will be taken against educational institutions which refuse to pay teachers and non-teaching staff. The order has clarified that the directors of the institutes would be called for a hearing.

For the last few years various teachers’ unions, including Maharashtra State Education Revolutionary Organization are working for the teachers in private schools. They had drawn the attention of the school education department by complaining that their salaries were being held during the lock down. For this, Shikshak Kranti Sanghatana had demanded that the school education department should take initiative to pay the salaries of thousands of teachers who are starving in the state.

On the backdrop of this, the education department has issued orders that teachers in non-subsidized schools should be paid immediately. The department had observed that private non-granted schools in the state were not paying regular salaries to teachers and non-teaching staff. According to the rules of the department, it is the responsibility of the concerned school management to pay the salaries of teachers and non-teaching staff in these schools.

Meanwhile, teachers and non-teaching staff are being held hostage by the management in the time of crisis.
Maharashtra Private School Employees (Conditions of Service) Regulations Act, 1977 and the Maharashtra Private Schools (Conditions of Service) Rules, 1981 are applicable to non-granted, private schools in the state.

According to the rules, teachers and non-teaching staff of any private school are required to pay salaries, allowances and other benefits after retirement. However, many school management are not paying the salaries of teachers and non-teaching staff. The department has received numerous complaints for this and as a result of such schools, the school can be de-recognized as per the provisions of this rule, the school education department has warned.
