Rs 5,000 in fines collected during the drive
Nashik: Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) has revived its action on the shopkeepers and vendors who were selling Polystyrene (thermocol) sheets at Main Road, MG Road, old Nashik, CIDCO and other parts of the city.
During the drive in Cidco Prabhag health department officials of NMC have collected a fine of Rs 5,000 from such shopkeepers. NMC sources informed that it will continue to take action against the violators.
Meanwhile, during the ban the NMC officials seized three pick-up vans full thermocol sheets and decoration material worth over Rs 2.5 lakh. Although the state government has imposed the plastic ban from July 1, on plastic and thermocol several traders, street vendors and shopkeepers were seen selling the banned thermocol sheets and decorative sets for Ganesh Festival.
Acting on the information, the Cidco Prabhag officials started conducting raids and imposed fines on these shopkeepers. The corporation had started such action a few months ago but it was discontinued as the vendors and shopkeepers had stopped selling the banned products.
But the action was revived today as the vendors again took to selling the banned thermocol sheets. However, environmentalists are demanding consistency in such actions so that the use of banned thermocol can stop forever.
