Maharashtra Legislative Council polls before May 27

Maharashtra Legislative Council polls before May 27

NEW DELHI :

A day after Governor BS Koshyari requested the Election Commission to hold elections, the poll body today decided to conduct Maharashtra Legislative Council polls before May 27.

Amid the COVID-19 crisis, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has to be elected to the legislature to continue as the Chief Minister, officials said.

Nine Legislative Council seats fell vacant on April 24 in Maharashtra. On the Governor’s request, the Election Commission conducted a meeting, earlier in the day, and decided to hold polls.

The polls to the MLC were delayed due to the Coronavirus situation in Maharashtra, where the largest number of cases have been reported.

According to the rules, the Chief Minister and the Ministers have to become member of the Assembly or Legislative council within six months after they are sworn in, or they will have to step down.

Earlier, the coalition government of Shiv Sena, NCP and the Congress had decided to nominate Thackeray for the Legislative Council and a group of leaders met Koshyari.
