NASHIK: Perhaps in a first in the country and state that any district collector is writing an open letter to candidates contesting the Lok Sabha elections and making appeal to them to take precautions while following the Model Code of Conduct by wishing them all the best.

District collector Suraj Mandhare Monday while congratulating the candidates vying for Nashik parliamentary seat for which the polling is slated for April 29 between 7.00 am and 6.00 pm has appealed to the candidates that they should take every precaution while contesting the election as a candidate.

In an open letter to candidates, Mandhare made several instructions on a number of factors including joining of WhatsApp Group, Model Code of Conduct, election process and procedure, EVM-VVPAT, training to election officers, employees, distribution of polling material and its acceptance and actual voting.

As per the instructions of the ECI, the district election office (DEO) has prepared a WhatsApp Group for candidates. The EC will upload and update election-related information from time to time to the candidates.

The contestants are required to go through it regularly and follow the instructions made in it without fail. The letter says: Candidates should strictly follow the MCC on election expenditure by the candidates and that they should ensure that no violation of the code has occurred.

There will be many phases ahead in the election process from randomization of
EVM-VVPAT up to actual voting. Candidates are required to cooperate to the EC in multiple phases of the election process including sealing of EVM-VVPAT machines, training to election officers, employees, distribution of polling material and its acceptance and actual voting.

There may be technical hatches during the process. The candidates and their proxies at the polling booths need to understand the whole process and cooperate with the concerned officers without getting panic, the open letter said.

Meanwhile, the election office made a clarification on the deployment of polling agent at a polling station. It said that the polling agent deployed at that particular polling station must be a voter of that polling station. He will not be authorized to use the mobile phone during the voting.
