Nashik: A flying squad of state excise department raided Maruti car carrying illegal liquor stock and seized the stock of liquor worth Rs. 5.62 lakh from it. The action was taken in Kathipada area in Surgana tehsil.
The state excise department has remained vigilant to curb the use of illegal liquor during Lok Sabha elections. All liquor selling shops were shut on Sunday due to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Jayanti.
On the backdrop of this, deputy commissioner of state excise department Prasad Surve received an input about a transport of illegal liquor in the district. Accordingly, the squad of inspector M B Chavan, Khandve, secondary inspector Devdutt Pote, Niri Pandit Jadhav, Kailas Kasbe and their colleagues laid a trap on Sunday night in Kathipada Shivar on Surgana-Ambarthan road.
After suspect Maruti car (GJ 15 CA 7802) reached the area, the squad raided it. However, the driver was succeeded in fleeing from the spot taking benefit of the darkness. The squad found 1920 bottles (40 boxes 180 ml) of country liquor and 1200 bottles (25 boxes) of Santra country liquor during checking of the car. They seized this liquor stock and the car, amounting to total Rs. 5.62 lakh. Inspector Chavan is investigating further.
