Ganeshotsav begins today
Nashik: Ganeshotsav, the festival celebrating Lord Ganesha’s sojourn on the earth will begin tomorrow (Thursday, September 13). On Wednesday, people were busy in making preparations for the arrival of the Lord.
Preparations were on in households as well as at Sarvajanik Ganesh Mandals for the festival. This year the festival will be on for 11 days as Anant Chaturdashi, the last day of the festival, falls on the 11th day – i.e. Sunday, September 23.
Markets are geared up for the festival since last month or so. Various shops were crowded with pooja, decoration material, music CDs, DVDs of devotional songs. Shops of sweets, electronic goods, home appliances, clothes, gift articles were also flooded with material and people as citizens enjoy shopping during the festive occasion.
Ganeshotsav marks the beginning of the long festive season of Hindus in which the Ganeshotsav is followed by Navratri, Dussehra and then Diwali, the festival of lights. The next 11 days of Ganeshotsav will witness electrifying, enthusiastic atmosphere among people as everyone – rich & poor, old & young and men and women, people from all walks of life celebrate the festival.
Meanwhile, Hindu women celebrated the festival of ‘Hartalika’ today. They observed fast throughout the day and worshipped Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati on the occasion. Married women prayed to the deities to keep intact their marital relation with their present husbands for a long period, even in next births as human beings whereas unmarried girls prayed for getting good, loving, caring husbands.
