Vehicle licenses, permits and vehicle-related documents which expired during the lockdown will now be valid till September 30. The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has decided to extend the validity of licenses and documents as the lockdown has extended. The concessions has been given to prevent Coronavirus infection. This has brought relief to motorists who are worried about the expiration date of motor vehicle documents.
Government offices, especially Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) are operating with limited manpower. Currently, vehicle registration is being given priority in RTOs. As a result, the validity of motor vehicle documents has been extended by 3 months to avoid possible congestion.
From February 1 to June 30, the validity of vehicle fitness certificate, licenses (all types), licenses, registrations and other motor vehicle-related documents, which has been expired during the lockdown, have been given extension till September 30.
The Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has directed that the documents be valid till September 30. Earlier, it was suggested that the documents be valid till June 30. However, the Highways Ministry has clarified that the extension has been given as measures to prevent corona infection are still underway.
The decision of tax exemption on state governments
The state government should consider giving concessions on various taxes on vehicles, license requirement tax, passenger tax, renewal fee, the penalty for licenses. The state government are directed to make decisions about the same.
