NASHIK: The state government has decided to impose a uniform property tax for mobile towers across the state. The government has appointed a high-level committee under the chairmanship of the Principal Secretary, Urban Development Department, to work out the modalities of the property tax levied on mobile towers and to determine procedures for legalizing unauthorized towers.
There are 370 towers of mobile companies in Nashik Municipal Corporation limits. The companies had gone to court five years ago after the town planning department of NMC started cracking down on unauthorized mobile towers. As a result, it has become impossible for NMC to take action, besides, the taxes and fees of Rs. 10 crores are still pending. After that, the municipal corporation had surveyed the city and calculated the mobile tower.
Accordingly, 73 mobile towers were found in East, 73 in West, 40 in CIDCO, 45 in Satpur, 82 in Panchavati, and 57 in Nashik Road division. But as mobile companies expanded their services, mobile towers were erected on many private buildings. But most of them were found to be unauthorized. Nashik Municipal Corporation has decided to levy property tax and recover arrears by surveying the mobile towers in the city through a private organization.
