State govt’s helping hand for inter-caste marriages

NASHIK: Financial assistance of Rs. 2.60 crore has been given by the state government’s social justice department to 620 married couples in the Nashik division. The state government is giving financial assistance to promote inter caste marriages. It is called inter caste marriage when a person from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Vimukt Jati, Nomadic Tribes and Special Backward Classes and another person from Hindus, Jains, Lingayats, Buddhists, Sikhs get married.

Also, the marriage of married couples belonging to sub-categories in Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Deprived Castes, Nomadic Tribes and Special Backward Classes is recognized as inter caste marriage. Under this scheme, financial assistance of Rs. 50,000 is given to each couple. Inter caste married couples are given a cheque in the name of both husband and wife.

In the Nashik division, financial assistance of Rs. 2.60 crore was given to 620 couples in the financial year 2020-21. 120 couples from Nashik were given Rs 60 lakh, while in Dhule 100 couples were given Rs 50 lakh and 60 couples were given Rs 30 lakh in Nandurbar. Jalgaon, 120 couples were given Rs 60 lakh, whereas 120 couples were given Rs 60 lakh in Ahmednagar.

To avail of the benefit of the scheme, the couple must be residents of Maharashtra. Caste certificate and inter caste marriage certificate are a must. After fulfilling the above documents, the applicant is required to submit the application to the District Social Welfare Officer of the Zilla Parishad.
