NMC’s welfare dept cripples due to lack of machinery and manpower

Only 72 lakh spent out of 4 crores of total fund

NASHIK:

The Social Welfare Department in Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) is itself crippling due to lack of manpower and machinery. The Corporation has made a reserve of Rs 4 crore for various schemes for the Person With Disability (PWD). The department in the last eight months has spent only 72 lakh on various schemes out of Rs 4 crore, which total funds allotted for schemes of PWD’s.

There are around 7200 PWD’s in Nashik city, as per the recent survey and data available with the social welfare department. From April 1, 2019, to December 6, 2019, the department has received 899 applications from PWD’s in the city. The department has 363 applications still pending on various grounds of scrutiny. Out of them, 108 has been rejected due to lack of documents and 70 applications are rejected on age factor.

The Deputy Commissioner of NMC Archana Tambe stated, “There are a total of 10 different schemes for the PWD in NMC’s social welfare department. All the 10 schemes are handled by a single staffer. There are no any machinery available for us and no manpower at all. The fund disbursed so far is the best in the department so far. We still have four-month in hand and we will surely deliver our best.”

The Social Welfare Department has also given a written letter to the PWD agitators, who recently staged a dharna outside NMC. The departments have promised to make them beneficiary in the schemes of the NMC if they have provided proper documents and are eligible for the scheme.

“The applications are mostly rejected due to various issues in the applications. Mostly, the applicants are already beneficiary of another scheme or have no sufficient documents as per requirement. It is also a time-consuming process as it is checked by the scrutiny committee. The department has no issue to give benefits to PWD under the schemes they are eligible, but the application should be proper.”
