Fresh restrictions; Night Curfew returns

MUMBAI: Maharashtra has imposed a night curfew, brought in new rules for weddings, public events amid the Omicron alarm. The government has announced a night curfew from 9 pm to 6 am. According to the revised guidelines, gathering of more than five persons in public places across the state is prohibited from 9 pm-6 am, only 100 people allowed in indoor weddings & not more than 250 in outdoor weddings; 50% capacity for gyms, spa, hotel, theater & cinema hall.

The new guidelines, which came into effect from midnight of 25th December - seven days before New Year’s Eve, restrict attendance at indoor weddings to 100 people and not more than 250 people or 25 per cent whichever is less in outdoor weddings.

Indoor venues like gyms, spas, hotels, theatres, and cinema halls will be allowed to run at 50 per cent capacity, while sports events will be allowed to have 25 per cent occupancy, the rules said.

The restrictions were announced on a day when Mumbai reported 683 new COVID-19 cases, the highest since October 6, while Maharashtra added 1,410 new cases - the sharpest rise since October 27.

The tally of Omicron infections reported in Maharashtra rose to 108 on Friday with 20 cases of the new coronavirus variant coming to light, officials said. As many as 54 of 108 patients have been already discharged. Eleven new cases were reported from Mumbai, six from Pune, two from Satara, and one from Ahmednagar.


  • There shall be a ban on any assembly of people in groups of more than 5 people from 9pm to 6am in all public places.

  • For other social, political, religious events also the number of attendees should not be more than 100 and in open space, this number should not be more than 250 or 25% of the capacity of the space whichever is less.

  • In the case of sports events/competitions, these may be held with number of spectators not exceeding 25% of the seating capacity of the venue.

  • Restaurants, gyms, spas, cinemas halls to operate at 50% capacity attendance. All of them will have to declare their full potential as well as 50% capacity.

  • In case of any other kind of gathering, that does not fall under any of the category listed above, DDMA shall decide the ceiling of number of persons who may attend such gathering,
