NASHIK: A farmer committed suicide by consuming pesticides at Talwade Bhamer village in Satana taluka of the district, police said.
Jaikheda police said, the deceased Manohar Popat Gaikwad had taken a loan from a bank for his kharip crop. But due to untimely rain the crops were destroyed, so could not repay a loan amount. Fed up with his precarious situation, he took this extreme step on Thursday, police said.
A case was registered and further investigation was on, police added. Meanwhile, of the total number of farmers’ suicides committed during the last year, maximum 2,567 cases were reported from Maharashtra, followed by 1,072 cases from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh (564), Telangana (466), Madhya Pradesh (235) and Chhattisgarh (227), as per the NCRB data.
