NMC to start Cattle pen soon
NASHIK: Nashik Municipal Corporation will soon start cattle pens and appoint a contractor for lifting stray animals. The corporation has invited tenders for this work. This contract will be completed within a few days, after which, stray animals like cows and bulls will be sent to the cattle pen.
There is no cattle pen in the city. Due to this, all stray animals are found sitting on the road. Citizens have been complaining of obstruction to traffic due to stray cattle in various parts of the city. The last contract got over on March 31, 2018, since then there is no system to lift animals on roads. But now the NMC has started the tender procedure again and it has invited the tenders for this work.
Many times accidents and traffic congestion have happened due to stray animals. In January this year, a 7-year boy and 70 years old lady were seriously injured in the cattle attack. People have been demanding shelter for such stray cattle in the city. NMC has animal shelters in four division but these are closed.
Now there is only a big shelter with a capacity of 100 animals in Panchvati but NMC lacks manpower. Currently, cattle cannot be shifted to Panjarpole as they have limited capacity and cannot accommodate additional cattle.
NMC has been taking help of NGOs for shifting the animals. “If we get any call relating to the stray animal then we take immediate action, we clear the road and shift the animal with the help of NGO and administrative employees. But this needs some mechanism and the tenders have been floated
Once the contract is in place the stray animals will find shelter and the problems of the road will also reduce”, informed Dr Pramod Sonawane, Animal Husbandry officer NMC.
