With a mission to spread awareness about orthopaedic disability through cycling, Stefan Voormans, an award-winning paraplegic cyclist from Germany is leading the Cyclothon 2020 started from Kolhapur-Karad on February 12, 2020.

‘Jai Maharashtra’, chanted the paraplegic cyclist when he reached near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statue in Nashik Road yesterday morning as part of his 8-day, 650-km long cycling. The message by Stefan Voormans from Nashik citizens was loud and clear – “Take up cycling. It is beneficial both the ways – individually for good health and socially for reducing traffic and air pollution.”

Cyclothon 2020 is an initiative undertaken jointly by Ratna Nidhi and IMC Chamber of Commerce and Industry to spread awareness about orthopaedic disability through cycling. Stefan Voormans, an award-winning paraplegic cyclist from Germany is padelling a 650-km distance through cycling.

Stefan, the paraplegic cyclist who had gone through more than 60 surgeries in his life has set an example before the society that your disability should not become your obstacle to achieve goals in life. “For me, cycling has been a good experience in India as I am well conversant with Indian traffic since my landing in 2005 in India.

This is my first step towards this great mission. My next venture will be without the use of bike,” Stefen said during his felicitation at Nasiklub here adding that it was an unforgettable experience to interact with Nashik citizens who are more enthusiastic about cycling.

RAAM fame Dr Mahendra Mahajan and Hitendra Mahajan, Nashik Cyclists Foundation president Ratnakar Aher and trustee of Ratna Nidhi Charitable Trust Rajiv Mehta were present on the dais. Former Armyman Deepchand, who lost both legs and his right arm in the 1999 Kargil war was also present.

Today, Stefan would pedal 150-km from Mumbai Naka at 6.30 am to reach at Thane before concluding his cycling in Mumbai tomorrow.  The German paraplegic cyclist has started pedalling via Kolhapur-Karad, Satara, Pune, Narayangaon, Sangamner and Nashik to reach at Thane today and in Mumbai tomorrow on the concluding day.
