25 people who attended Markaz event arrested in Thane

THANE :

As many as 25 people, including 21 foreign nationals, who had attended the Markaz Nizamuddin meet in New Delhi last month, were arrested on Thursday by the city police from Mumbra town on the charges of an alleged violation of the visa rules and not following the norms regarding social distancing during ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Among the total arrested accused are 13 Bangladeshis and 8 Malaysian nationals and four locals, police said.
Senior police inspector Nitin Thakre of the Crime Branch Unit-I said that the foreign nationals had a valid tourist visa but they violated the visa rules by attending the religious meet at Markaz instead of touring the country.

After the religious meet, they came and stayed in groups at two locations here, he said and informed that they stayed at the Tanvir Ulum Madarsa Trust, Kausa and Al Nadi Ul Falah, Kausa.

Even though the Epidemic Act and the Disaster Management Act were in force all over the country, these 21 stayed in Mumbra together and they were well aware that if they did not follow the social distancing, it would spread the pandemic.

They were taken into custody on April 1 and lodged at the quarantine centre at Shil Daighar, the official said.
Two different offences under sections 188, 269, 270 of Indian Penal Code and also under the Foreign Nationals Act, Epidemics Act and National Disaster Management Act were registered with the Mumbra police station against the Bangladeshis and Malaysians on that day and next day.

The four locals who sheltered them were also booked in the crimes. As the quarantine period of these 25 expired today, they were taken into custody and placed under arrest, police said.

They were produced before a local court, which remanded them into judicial custody and later released them on bail.
However, the court ordered them not to leave the country, an official release by the police stated.
