18 unauthorised shrines demolished


Nashik Road : As per orders by the Supreme Court, Nashik Municipal Corporation has started action against unauthorised shrines in the city since last eight days. As a part of this, 18 unauthorised shrines in Nashik Road area were demolished. Citizens at some place voluntarily removed unauthorised shrines.

On the backdrop of tension in Old Nashik on Thursday, police personnel in large number were deployed as a precautionary measure. The drive was started with demolition of unauthorised shrine at Mathura Chowk in Vihitgaon. Shrines near rickshaw stand in Anuradha Chowk, near Maheshwari Bhavan on Artillery Centre road, opposite Ramkuvar Niwas at Jail Road, near Mahajan hospital and opposite Roza Colony on Motwani road.

As social activists Vinayak Adhav, Devidas Pawar and others showed documents about land on old Saykheda road, additional construction was demolished. Shrikrishna temple near Subhash library at Vihitgaon, Mahadev temple in Rajrajeshwari Chowk at Jail road and Mahalaxmi temple on Pimpalpatti were demolished. Idols in Mahalaxmi temple and the temple in Dhikalenagar were shifted after religious rites.

NMC divisional officer Somnath Wadekar, Jayashri Sonawane, Nitin Nere, Raju Gosavi, DCP Shrikrishna Kokate, ACP Mohan Thakur, senior police inspector Bajirao Mahajan, Pandharinath Dhokne, anti-riot squad, municipal officials and employees took part in the drive.
